This week in maths we are learning about number bonds within 10. (For example 2 + 4 = 6 or 5 + 5 = 10). The children are being introduces to the + sign.
Practical activities to try:
- Ask your child to collect different items from around the house or garden (e.g. 7 things that are green). Ask your child how many items have we got altogether. Get your child to split the items up in different ways and show them how to write it in a number sentence: 2 + 5 = 7 3 + 4 = 7 7 + 0 =7. Ask your child to have a go at writing them down.
- Look at this video with your child https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJRKAd11MfI discuss all the different pictures and how they represent a number sentence (5 + 1 = 6). See if your child can draw a picture to a represent a number sentence you give them. (E.g. Can you write me a number sentence for 7 + 2 = 9. Your child might draw 7 fish and 2 jelly fish or 7 blue dots and 2 pink dots). When they feel confident with this you could draw the picture and the children have to work out the number sentence.
- Write down 3 or 4 number sentences that add up to different numbers on a separate sheet of paper write down the answer to these. Your child has to try and match them up.
